Friday, October 30, 2026 · Price and news cutoff: 8:15 a.m. Eastern
This edition reconstructs the market as of 8:15 a.m. Eastern. It was prepared after the open and excludes later prices, news and the 8:30 a.m. economic release results.
LEAN: Bearish, with caution. Overnight weakness extended the defensive picture left by Thursday’s close, but ES was already near its overnight low at the cutoff. We favor further pressure unless a recovery starts to retain ground; that is a reason to wait for a clear response at the levels, rather than chase a decline that has already traveled.
What’s Shaping Today’s Market
Thursday’s post-close weakness left ES with a recovery to prove. The overnight session did not repair that damage: by 8:15 a.m., ES was at 7,668.25, close to the 7,664.00 overnight low and well below the 7,713.00 overnight high. The important change is the lower starting point, rather than the sequence of every overnight bounce.
Technology earnings remain part of that fragile backdrop. Amazon’s latest results combined 39.3% AWS growth with an expectation of roughly $220 billion in cash capital spending this year. Strong cloud growth therefore sits alongside a large investment commitment. Reporting available before the cutoff put Amazon and Intel at the center of pressure on S&P and Nasdaq futures. For ZMI, this is an earnings-sensitive market in which a rebound has to show that it can keep its progress; the headlines alone do not establish what caused a particular ES move.
At the cutoff, the next scheduled economic test was the 8:30 a.m. Eastern Employment Cost Index. Compensation costs matter to the inflation and rate outlook. That release could have challenged or reinforced the starting view, but its result is outside this 8:15 a.m. snapshot.

KEY MARKET LEVELS
7,794.25 — Wed Oct 28 regular-session high.
7,767.25 — Thu Oct 29 regular-session high.
7,754.00 — Thu Oct 29 regular-session close.
7,751.50 — Wed Oct 28 regular-session low.
7,725.25 — Thu Oct 29 regular-session low.
7,713.00 — Fri Oct 30 overnight through 8:15 a.m. high.
7,664.00 — Fri Oct 30 overnight through 8:15 a.m. low.
At the cutoff: 7,668.25. The first two upper references are 7,713.00 and 7,725.25; the map does not verify an intermediate recovery level or a farther downside reference below 7,664.00.
Market Mindset
We expect a fragile session, with another test of the lower area a reasonable starting expectation unless ES begins to recover and hold lost ground. Price was close to 7,664 at the cutoff, so the bearish lean does not make chasing the low attractive. That low matters because it marks the edge of the observed overnight range: a recovery that survives a later pullback would suggest the lower area is being defended, while a break that stays below would show the market continuing to discover lower prices.
The earnings backdrop leaves recoveries with more to prove, and the scheduled compensation-cost release added uncertainty to that assessment. A sustained reclaim of 7,713 would materially challenge the bearish starting view, with 7,725.25 the next recovery reference. Until that sort of improvement develops, a bounce and a repaired market remain different things. The distance between the current low and the upper references also argues against treating every rebound as a clear opportunity.
TRADER’S PLAYBOOK FOR TODAY
Failed recovery at 7,713
Wait for a recovery toward 7,713.00 to stall, lose the area and fail to regain it before considering a potential short-side setup back toward 7,664.00. Acceptance above 7,713 and a later pullback that holds would invalidate that failed-recovery case. Stand aside if price remains between the references without a clear response.
Support or reclaim at 7,664
A test of 7,664.00, or a brief break followed by a reclaim, needs to survive a later pullback before considering a countertrend recovery. The next verified upper reference is 7,713.00, with no intermediate objective verified here; do not assume that the whole distance will be traveled. Losing 7,664 again without recovery would leave the rebound case unconfirmed. Stand aside if the available room and structural risk cannot be assessed.
Acceptance above the overnight high
Sustained trade above 7,713.00 followed by a supported retest would put 7,725.25 into play. If that level is also reclaimed and retained, 7,751.50 and 7,754.00 become the next repair area. Falling back below the relevant reclaimed level and failing to recover it would invalidate that step of the continuation.
Breakdown below the overnight low
A sustained break below 7,664.00 followed by a failed attempt to regain it would reinforce the bearish reading. A retained reclaim would challenge that breakdown. No farther downside destination is verified in this map, so stand aside from a setup that requires inventing one.
When patience matters most
Repeated crossings without retained progress, an initial economic-release burst without a supported retest, or unclear structural risk are reasons to wait. The first move through a level is not confirmation by itself.
Events That Could Change the Tone
Today, as known at the cutoff
Friday, October 30 · 8:30 a.m. Eastern — Employment Cost Index, third quarter 2026. The release was scheduled for 15 minutes after the information cutoff and could change how the market judged compensation pressure and the rate outlook. This delayed edition includes no result or subsequent price reaction.
A practical ES futures example
At the cutoff, ES was at 7,668.25 near the 7,664 overnight low. The preparation question was whether a test or brief break could reclaim that boundary and survive a later pullback. A first crossing alone did not confirm support.
The common mistake
A bearish lean does not make chasing an already-traveled decline attractive. Repeated crossings without retained progress, unclear structural risk and an unsupported first response to economic news were reasons to wait.
